Geographical Location and Local Traditions

Some diets (Asian diets, Mediterranean diet, latin diets ) are the result of cultural factors and geographical availability of foods.

Mediterranean diet

  • strong points: healthy fats(olive oil, fish oil), greens, antioxidants (tomato, garlic, blue fish)
  • weak points: occasional excess of fat and carbs

Asian diets — Chinese, Japanese and Indian diets

Strong Points

Plenty of fruit and vegetables (more than the typical Western diet), less red meat and more fish instead. There are more healthful omega-3 fatty acids and less overall cholesterol, more herbs and spices (flavors give a more filling sensation), and soy. Studies have proven that more soy in diet results in less breast cancer, prostate cancer, and menopausal problems. In these diets, there are fewer processed foods. Food is always freshly prepared.

Weak Points

The sodium level is far higher, especially in the widely used soy sauce. The recipes, sometimes with unfamiliar ingredients, often take a long time to prepare.

Latin diets — Mexican Food

Strong Points

The most colorful, flavorful foods in the world, with plenty of fruit and vegetables.

Weak Points

Very high sodium, fat and cholesterol levels.
